When we speak or sing the muscles of the vocal cords contract due to which the two vocal cords get stretched and get closed together leaving only a narrow slit between them. The lungs plays a major role in this as they passes a current of air between the two vocal chords. This passing air causes the vocal cords to vibrate and we can produce sound.

Hope it helps.....

❥voice box is at the upper end of the windpipe. Two vocal cards, are stressed across the voice box or larynx in such way that is leaves a narrow slit between them for the passage of air.
