sun is very big ball of burning gases, therefore it is a star and it is the closest star to earth. nothing happens to the sun at night, the earth rotates and moves in the opposite place where the sun shines therefore here it is night and on the other part of earth is day or vice- versa.

Sun is a star because it has its own light and remains fixed in the same position and planets revolve around it.
During the rotation of the Earth the part away from the sun receives no light and the night occurs. But nothing happens to the Sun it remains fixed in its own position.
