Harappan culture is divided into 4 phases which are as follows :
1.Pre Harappan
2. Early Harappan
3. Mature Harappan
4. Late Harappan
•The pre Harappan phase is situated in eastern Balochistan. Mehrgarh is the earliest farming site of the Indus valley in the pre Harappan phase. Nomad people of this phase began to live a settled agriculture life.
•The people lived in the early Harappan phase in large villages in the plains near the Ravi river. The growth of towns In this phase is slow. During this phase the transformation from rural to urban life took place. Amri & Kot Diji are excavation sites of early Harappan phase.
• Great cities were came into existence in the mature Harappan phase. For e.g - Kalibangan on the Hajra river. .The system of town planning in the phase is well planned.
•The end of the Indus culture started in the late Harappan phase. Lothal was an excavation sites of this phase. Lothal is a centre of commerce between the Harappan Civilization and Mesopotamia as well as the rest of India.
