the main character in the story salvotore is predicted to be a very responsible which is shown buy him calling out for his brothers when they too far from the shore and dressed them up when they had to climb the hot vineclad hill for the midday meal. then he was portrayed to be loving and attached to the island he lived on, his family and the girl he loved when he left to become a sailor in the navy of king victor emmanuel and he was dreadfully homesick. when he returned home due to being diagnosed with rheumatism he saw his family due to which eyes were filled with water which too depicts that he was very emotional. how loving he was, was predicted when the girl whom he loved refused to love him due to his disability he did not blame the girl and never spoke a hard word for her.
