How is the number of chromosomes of the parent cells maintained in the cells of the offsprings of sexually reproducing organisms?

The reproductive cells are formed by meiosis. During sexual production, the cells of the parents fuse to form zygote . Now in order to maintain the diploid state (same no. Of chromosome as in parent cell) of Zygote the cells produced must be haploid (half the no. Of chromosome as in parent cell). Since meiosis produces haploid cells hence the number of chromosome remains maintained.
