How is the pH of gastric juice helpful in digestive system

Our stomach produces hydrochloric acid ( of pH 1.4). The dilute HCl helps in digesting our food. The excess of acid in our stomach causes indigestion. In order to get rid of pain caused by indigestion, we can take bases called 'antacid'. They react with excess of acid in stomach and neutralise it.
