Generally, we use indicators to test whether a substance is Acidic, Basic or Neutral by examining different colors shown by indicators in different mediums.

One of the most common examples of an indicator is Litmus paper. It is of two types:
1. Red litmus paper: it changes it's color from Red to blue under alkaline conditions and shows no change under acidic conditions.
2.Blue litmus paper: It changes it's color from Blue to Red under acidic conditions and shows no change under alkaline conditions.

However, Litmus paper can tell us that whether the solution is acidic or alkaline. It cannot tell us that the solution is how much acidic or alkaline.
Now for this purpose we use pH scale and a universal indicator. Universal indicator is a mixture of different indicators.

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14 with 0 being extremely acidic and 14 being extremely alkaline.

Some examples of pH are:
Stomach acid 2
Acid rain         5.5
Milk                 7
Bleach            13
