After elections to the Lok Sabha is held around the country, Members of Parliament are elected representing constituencies from the different states and union territories of the Indian Union. These MPs then separately gather together in their party or group's meeting and either elect or select a leader as per their discretion.

The  President of India then calls the leader of the party that has won the majority of the 550 seats and invites him to form the Government. In case no party has won a clear majority, the President either calls the leader of the party with the highest number of seats or uses his discretion to call a leader who he feels can garner majority support on the floor of the house to form a Government. In the latter event, the President requests the leader to prove his majority support within a certain number of days, which period is decided the President.

The leader who forms the Government becomes the Prime Minister of India and gets the opportunity of choosing members of his cabinet of ministers. On a suitable date, thereafter, the Prime Minister and his cabinet members are sworn as ministers by the President.
