straight line described by a number? How is the
direction of motion specified by the number
describing position?

Now if particle moves in straight line towards positive x axis, then every no. on the axis, describes the position of the particle after regular time interval. This is applicable only when direction of motion is specified i.e. in our case particle is moving along positive x axis.
