The President is elected by the members of an electoral college consisting of the elected members of both the Houses of Parliament and theelected members of the Legislative Assemblies of States and the Union Territories of Delhi and Pondicherry.

(i) The President is not elected directly by the people.

(ii) All the members of parliament and member of state legislative Assemblies (MLA) elect the President.

(ii) A candidate contesting for the President's post has to get a majority of votes to win the elections.

This ensures that the President can be seen to represent the entire nation.
