Cobalt and Nickel were put in same slot to adjust Mendeleev's periodic table according to their atomic masses. But they had totally different properties.

In modern periodic table the elements were placed according to their atomic number which is unique for every element. And hence cobalt and nickel were given their appropriate positions in modern periodic table.
