Digestion in ruminants:-
Digestion in ruminants occurs sequentially in a four-chambered stomach. Plant material is initially taken into the Rumen, where it is processed mechanically and exposed to bacteria than can break down cellulose (foregut fermentation). The food reaches the stomach and the digestion process takes place.
Major Difference in the digestion process:-
In ruminants, there is the necessity of a four chambered stomach and the undigested food again comes to mouth for its proper digestion. This undigested food is called Cud. That's why ruminants like cow always appear to chew food almost all the time. It is done so because it is not easy to digest cellulose.
