how is the small intestine designed to absorb digested food? The inner lining of the small intestine has numerous villi which increase the surface area for absorption. The villi are richly supplied with blood vessels which take the absorbed food to each and every cell of the body.

The inner wall of the small intestine is modified into tiny figure-like projections called villi, which increase the surface and for the absorption of digested food. These villi are highly vascularised, i.e., richly provided with blood vessels villi also contain lactease, which help in absorption of digested fats.
