In the RO process Sodium meta bisulphite is used to kill bacterias in the water. If sea wateris used for cooling purpose or drinking, chlorine is used before treatment. In the municipal supply of drinking water, chlorine is used as disinfectant.

hEyA here u go....

Chlorine and oxygen are the two most commonly used. Oxygen can be introduced directly by bubbling air into the water, or by adding compounds that give off oxygen by decomposition, such as ozone and hydrogen peroxide. The chemicals are potent because they release the oxygen as free atoms, which are highly reactive because of their strong affinity for electrons from other atoms.

Chlorine is also available in a variety of chemicals that release free chlorine, which also is strongly oxidizing like free oxygen. Chlorine gas could be bubbled into water directly, but it is so poisonous if released into the air that this is not usually done outside of heavily controlled industrial environments
