How is wood converted into coal??

Millions of years ago, the dead remains of plants, animals and tress got burried deep inside the earth. Hence, they were subjected to very hight temperature and pressure. Due to the heat the wood remains got converted into coals.

Even now we can convert wood into charcoal, it can be prepared as follows:
When wood is burnt in a limited supply of air, then water and other volatile materials present in it get removed and a black substance 'charcoal' is left behind.
