Zinc is a metal of medium reactivity so it is extracted either by Roasting or Calcination.

Roasting is the extraction of metals from their sulphide ores, by heating strongly in the presence of air.

ZnSO4 + O2 ----> ZnO +SO2

Calcination is the extraction of metals from their carbonate ores by heating in the absence of air.

ZnCO3 -------> ZnO + CO2

Zn has affinity for Carbon and ZnO (zinc oxide) is reacted with Carbon to get the constituent metal.

ZnO + C ------> Zn + CO
