the purpose of ammeter is to measure the current flowing in an electric circuit. In order to measure all the current flowing in a line, the ammeter needs to be placed in series in a respective line.

In order to understand it must better, suppose you have 3 resistors connected in series in a circuit. If you need to find the current flowing in the circuit you should place ammeter in series, before or after any resistors.

similarly if there a multiple branches in circuit instead of single branch where current is to be measured.
