Kukum means Vermilion.
It is made from turmeric or any other local materials. The turmeric is dried and powdered with a bit of slaked lime, which turns the rich yellow powder into a red color.
It can also be made by mercury sulphide.
Thank you.

Kumkum is made of basically 2 materials..
1) turmeric powder
2) slaked lime.
Thus, when the turmeric powder is mixed with a little bit of slaked lime(CaOH) , the कुमकुम powder is made.
The presence of slaked lime (CaOH) turns the yellow colored turmeric powder to turn red.
