Longitudinal waves are the waves in which particles of sound wave travels parallel to the direction of energy transport. These types of waves travel in form of compression and rarefactions.

Thus, longitudinal waves travel in form of compressions and rarefactions in a medium.

Compression - Region of high pressure and low volume where particles come close to each other.

Rarefactions - Region of low pressure and comparatively high volume where particles are away from each other.

Like, take a slinky and attach it to a solid and fixed support. Stretch it, you will see a region of compression and a region of rarefaction. This is the best activity to understand longitudinal waves concept and see compressions and rarefactions.
