Four ashramas were recognised: brahmacharya, grihastha, vanaprasttw and samnyasa. Brahmin, kshatriya and vaishya men were expected to lead simple lives and study the Vedas during the early years of their life (brahmacharya). Then they had to marry and live as householders (grihastha).
