the atomic no of niclel is 28 so the electronic configuration of nickel is

1s {}^{2} \: 2s {}^{2} 2p {}^{6} \: 3 s {}^{2} \: 3p {}^{6} \: 4s {}^{2} \\ = 2 + 2 + 6 + 2 + 6 + 2 = \\ 28

being 2 positive it will donate both of its electrons of 4s^2

hence its total electrons would be

28 - 2 = 26
