it is done by a rule 2Nsquare rule .......
In K shell = 2*1 square = 2
In L shell = 2* 2 square = 8
In M shell = 2* 3 square = 18
In N shell =2*4 square = 32..........

The law is 2n². n= no of cell.
so k shell can hold 2× 1²= 2 electrons
L shell can hold 2×2²= 8 electrons
M shell can hold 2×3²=18 electrons
N shell can hold 2×4²=32 electrons
But if M or N is the last cell then there could be only 8 electrons.
Even the shells can hold 18 or 32 electrons.........
