There are four main federal principles in the Indian Constitution. They are:

1. It has a rigid Constitution. The Constitution is the supreme law of the land so this feature is necessary to uphold its supremacy.

2. It has a written Constitution which is essential for the proper functioning of the federal government.

3. There is a distribution of powers, between the central Government and State governments which is the most essential and ordained feature of a federal constitution. Both the governments exist together and are independent in their own spheres.

4. There is an independent and impartial judiciary to uphold the supremacy of the constitution. It interprets the various provisions and settles the disputes between the laws made by the governments and the Constitution.
