It's the same as a PC computer. They do not take some massive surge of power/fuel to start up. Just the normal rate.
However, they take awhile to get ready to use. Windows must do its silly little stuff. The diesel must warm up and pump up air. During that time, they consume energy at the normal idle rate.
So, for instance if it takes 6 minutes to warm up your diesel, and it idles at 10 gallons/hour, that's 1 gallon (4 litres).
