A carpel is composed of an ovary, a style, and a stigma. In origin, carpels are leaves or megasporophylls that have evolved to enclose the ovules. If the gynoecium (Gynoecium is most commonly used collective term for the megasporophylls) consists of a single pistil it is called monocarpellary.

Monocarpellary means ovary with one carpel. Superior ovary means the floral parts are arranged below the ovary on the thalamus.
