LATITUDES
Latitudes are imaginary lines drawn on the globe (model of the earth) which are full circles and run in east-west direction.Equator is the most important latitude which divides the globe into two equal halves : Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. It is the biggest latitude.Equator is 0° latitude. In the north of 0°Latitude, there are 90 latitudes and in the south also 90 latitudes are marked. After a Northern latitude, letter N is added and in the same manner when we mention a Southern latitude, letter S is added to show its location in Northern or Southern Hemisphere. 90°N Latitude is a point, not a circle, and known as North Pole. In the same way, 90°S Latitude is also a point, not a circle, and known as South Pole. So there are total 179 important longitudes on globe.(We can draw more than these no.s but for convenience of study they are drawn in certain number on the most of globes.) All latitudes are marked parallel to each other so they are also called parallels. The gap between two degrees is divided into 60 minutes. It is marked with ( ' ) sign.
♦ LONGITUDES
Longitudes are imaginary lines on the globe that run from North Pole to South Pole.Prime Meridian is 0° longitude. In the east of 0°, there are 179 important longitudes or meridians and in the west also 179 longitudes are marked. After an Eastern longitude, letter E is added and in the same manner when we mention a Western longitude, letter W is added to show its location in Eastern or Western Hemisphere. 180° longitude is known as International Date Line and neither E nor W is added after it. So there are total 360 important longitudes on globe. (We can draw more than these no.s but for convenience of study they are drawn in certain number on most of the globes.)
