How many major or effective parties are good for a democracy?

In a democratic process, quality should be ensured over quantity. In a democratic set up where a single part could lead to authoritarian rule, many parties could lead a coalition government which is too unstable. the role of opposition is equally important as of a ruling party. Therefore choosing a number is difficult. But we need at least two parties to enjoy a democratic government.
