Gram atoms means gram atomic weight. This is the mass of 1 mol of that substance.

mass of 1 mol of ammonia=17

mass of H atom per mol of NH3 =3

thus 8.5 g NH3 will have 8.5*3/17 g of H/mol of NH3 =1.5 g of H/mol.
