Three energies are involved in the transformation of  sodium to sodium ion

  • During the transformation of sodium the following reactions takes place

            Na(s)\rightarrow Na(g) (step1)

            Na(g) \rightarrow Na^{+}(g)+aq(step2)

            Na^{+}(g)+aq\rightarrow Na^{+}(g)(aq)(step3)

  • In step 1 of the reaction enthalpy of sublimation is used for the sodium to change from solid state to gaseous state
  • Ionisation enthalpy is used to change sodium to sodium ion in the gaseous state
  • In step 3 of the process the sodium ion in gaseous state changes into aqueos state using hydration energy
