Slightly faster songs might sound more appealing to listeners. If listeners hear the same songs on two competing radio stations, the station that speeds up playback may be perceived as having more energy. (The same argument drives the so-called between stations. Louder, the reasoning goes, creates a perception that a station is brighter, stronger and more energetic. If it’s louder, it must have more power! It’s a big topic that deserves it’s own question.)
If you speed up songs, you can play more of them in a given hour. Your competitor promises twelve songs in every hour? You can play thirteen. Same thing with commercials. Maybe your company has decided that listeners will tolerate only ten minutes of ads each hour before they get sick of you and punch the button. But if you speed them up by 10%, you can play eleven minutes worth of ads in those same ten minutes…and collect 10% more ad revenue!
