In order to find the total number of squares in a chessboard, we need to add up all the possible squares that can be formed by different units. Number of squares with sides :
a) 8x8 = 1 (As the chessboard is itself a big square)
b) 7x7 = 4
c) 6x6 = 9
d) 5x5 = 16
e) 4x4 = 25
f) 3x3 = 36
g) 2x2 = 49
h) 1x1 = 64

Therefore total number of squares in a chessboard = 1+4+9+16+25+36+49+64
= 204

Hope that helps !!
