How many states in South korea?

Gangwon
Chungcheong (North and South)
Gyeongsang (North and South)
Jeoolla (North and South)
Jeju (Yes, Jeju island is a province).

There are also eight cities that have their own territory and government like provinces but are called "province-level cities":
