I^{3-} or also known as the Triiodide ion is a chain of three iodine ions joined by single bonds. Each iodine ion has a total of nine lone pairs of electrons on I^{3-}.

This molecule can be prepared by treating iodine salt aqueous solutions with pure iodine. Due to the presence of lone pairs of electrons and its ion – ion repulsion, the iodine – iodine bond length in Triiodide ion is longer than normal iodine – iodine bond length.
