A tissue is a group of cells that have a similar shape and function. All animals can generally be considered to contain four tissue types: connective, muscular, nervous and epithelial tissue.

Connective Tissues

Connective tissues are fibrous tissues. They are made up of cells separated by non-living material, which is called an extracellular matrix. Connective tissue gives shape to organs and holds them in place. Blood, bone, tendon, ligament, adipose and areolar tissues are examples of connective tissues

Muscle Tissues

Muscle tissue is a soft tissue that composes muscles in animal bodies, and gives rise to muscles' ability to contract. Muscle tissue varies with function and location in the body. In mammals the three types are:skeletal muscle;non-striated muscle; and cardiac muscle.

Nervous tissue

Nerve tissue is composed of specialized cells which not only receive stimuli but also conduct impulses to and from all parts of the body. Nervous tissue is found within the nervous system and is made up of unique specialized cells. Like electrical circuits, the nervous system transmits signals from nerves to the spinal cordand brain. Cells known as neurons conduct these impulses, making it possible for us to use our senses.

Epithelial Tissues

The epithelial tissues are formed by cells that cover the organ surfaces . The cells comprising an epithelial layer are linked via semi-permeable, tight junctions; hence, this tissue provides a barrier between the external environment and the organ it covers.
