A car usually has 7 seven wheels.
4 that keep it off the ground.
One steering wheel.
One spare wheel incase something goes wrong with one of the wheels keeping it off if the ground.
One fly wheel. Or flex plate in an automatic. The flex or fly wheel assist in starting the motor and attaching the gearbox to the back wheels.

The Last time i checked, 4. Then again, there have been 3- wheeled cars, like the Reliant Robin from Britain. Also, cars have a spare wheel in case of Punctures(unless this is rhetorical) :P . Buses can have upto 10 wheels, trucks upto 18 or more. Airplanes can have up to 36(at least the big Russian does have that much). Some of the giant american pick up trucks have 6 wheels. The Mercedes G-wagon has 6 massive wheels. 4 wheels means more stabitlity and better drivetrain. Anything above that depends on the type of vehicle :)
