All told, the U.S. Air Force flew 5.25 million sorties over South Vietnam, North Vietnam, northern and southern Laos, and Cambodia, losing 2,251 aircraft: 1,737 to hostile action, and 514 in accidents. 2,197 of the losses were fixed-wing, and the remainder rotary-wing.

Many. the exact fig i'm not sure of but doing my tour alone hundreds of choppers were lost especially the infamous huey which played multiple roles in the war. It was a gun ship ,a medivac. Ship called a sllick. It was used as a recconisance ship. When the war first started or when the first hueys were sent to nam the nva and vc were deathly afraid of them. But over the years this fear evolved into total anarchy for the huey pilots for the nva had found out probably from the russians on how to bring the hueys down using rocket propel grenades they would shoot out the tail rotor
