Tipu Sultan was a ruler of Mysore. He did not want to have any alliances with the British.

He did not want to make peace and so he fought four wars against the British. These wars are famously known as the Anglo-Mysore wars.  

First Anglo-Mysore war: Capture of Madras along with his father Hyder Ali.

Second Anglo-Mysore war: He defeated Baillie and treaty of Mangalore.

Third Anglo-Mysore war: Travancore invation and treaty of Seringapatnam.

Fourth Anglo-Mysore wars: Tipu was defeated.
