Metals and non-metals usually combine through ionic bonding. In ionic bonding, a cation (which in most cases is a metal) and an anion (usually a no-metal). This ionic bonding occurs when there is an electrostatic attraction between the oppositely charged anion and cations. The electrostatic attraction occurs when the metals transfer electrons to the non-metals leading to the metals getting positively charged due to more protons than electrons while the non-metals form anions due to the increased number electrons making it negatively charged. This transfer of electrons from metals(cations) to no metals(anions) is known as electrovalence. It is through this process that metallic and non-metallic elements combine to form compounds.
