Mitochondria are able to synthesize their own proteins because they have their own RIBOSOMES inside them which combines with mRNA and synthesize protein.
The Ribosomes inside mitochondria differ from mitochondria outside them (i.e.cytoplasm). The Ribosomes inside mitochondria are 70s ribosomes. the ribosomes in the cytoplasm are 80s.
Mitochondria is also called as SEMI AUTONOMOUS cell organelle.

HOPE THIS HELPS :)
