For example, some bacteria with a generation time of a week or more would not show any increase over the first 24 hours. On the other hand, Escherichia coli, grown under ideal conditions, has a generation time of ~20 mins and so could in theory produce trillions of progeny in 24 hrs

Answer:

bacterium divides every 20 minuets, there would be three population doublings every hour, or 24 in 8 hours. So, 1 x 2 = 2, 2 x 2= 4, and 4 x 2= 8. You have 8 bacteria after one hour.
