Answer:

I love the land, the rivers, the hills, the greenery, the people, the food, the culture, the festivals, the religions, the languages, the million Gods (despite being unenthusiastic about God myself), the countryside, the paddy fields in my village, the canals, the valleys , the beaches, the jungles, the tea plantations, the cities (well, not all of them), etc.

There is just so much to explore here, so much life, so many struggles, such richness of literature, art, and music. The rich history of ancient civilizations, of middle age kingdoms. The rich tradition of scholarship in science, mathematics, astronomy and medicine.

But my love for India doesn’t blind me to its faults. I hate the sort of vulgar nationalistic jingoism that is in vogue nowadays, not just in India, but around the world. People go around handing out anti-national tags, to anything and anyone who doesn’t conform to their narrow, and twisted understanding of nationalism.

I despise the deification of our country. I hate when people start glorifying the past, getting all nostalgic that we were so and so. I hate the vulgarity of it all. All you need to do is look around, to see the terrible poverty which is a grim reality for a lot of our countrymen, and the injustices of Caste that are still alive.

For me, pride should stem from personal achievement, not by virtue of being born (which is not even your decision) in a particular corner of our rather small world, in a particular religion, race or caste. Thus, when these proud idiots march in the streets, waving their flags & shouting their slogans, I feel exasperated.

There is a line in the movie Gandhi, which I particularly like, ‘India is 700,000 villages, not a few hundred lawyers in Delhi and Bombay’. I think that sums up the idea of India (the idea which at least I prescribe to) perfectly, an ancient land spanning from the Himalayas to the Indian ocean. India is its 1.3 billion people, in all of their wonderful diversity.
