Solar generation is projected to climb from 7 percent of total U.S. renewable generation in 2015 to about 36 percent by 2050, making it the fastest-growing electricity source. Globally, renewables made up 24 percent of electricity generation in 2014, much of it from hydropower (17 percent).

A new analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance says that 50 percent of the world's energy will come from solar and wind by 2050. In 2015, wind and solar made up only 7 percent of global electricity generation.
