There is a 1 N force and your 1 kg mass. But the acceleration is 1 m/S^2, not your desired velocity of 1 m/s. So, to get 1 kg accelerated to 1 m/s, apply 1 N*s of energy, which could be 1 N force for 1 second. Or 2 N of force for 1/2 second.
