The percentage of India's labour force that was engaged in agriculture at the time of independence was about 70%.
EXPLANATION:
When India gained her independence in 1947 more than half of the total population of the country was engaged in agriculture or related activities, which is about 70% of total workforce of labours in India.
This estimate was made when the then Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru introduced the Five Year Plans to improve the socio-economic conditions of the country. But, it should be noted that most of the people involved in agriculture during that time were landless farmers who were working on the fields owned mostly by Zamindars.
So, they were actually not getting many benefits of their produce, so steps were taken and laws were made to take large pieces of land from these zamindars and to distribute it among the landless farmers so, that they could have proper employment and monetary benefits of their hard work and they could be saved from exploitation by zamindars.
