How much shorter is to walk diagonally across a rectangular field 80m long and 60m wide than along two of its adjacent sides ?

so, by Pythagoras theorem,

AB^{2} +BC^{2}+AC^{2}

If AB is 60 m and BC is 80 m.

Hence the diagonal AC will be 100 m.

So walking diagonally will take 100 m.

But if the person walks along the adjacent side, it will take

60 m + 80 m = 140 m

Hence, it is 140 m - 100 = 40 m shorter to walk along the diagonal rather then the adjacent sides.
