Meiosis

reduces the chromosome number in such a way that the daughter nuclei receive only one of each kind of chromosome. The process ensures that the next generation of individuals will have only the diploid number of chromosomes and a combination of traits different from that of either parent.

Mitosis -

The process in cell division by which the nucleus divides, typically in four stages (prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase) resulting in two new nuclei, each of which has exactly the same chromosome and DNA content as the original cell.
