The names of restriction enzymes are derived from the genus, species, and strain designations of the bacteria that produce them; for example, the enzyme EcoRI is produced by Escherichia coli strain RY13.

Dear Student,

● Restriction enzymes -

  • Restriction enzymes (aka restriction endonucleases) are enzymes that cleave DNA into fragments at specific sites within molecules.
  • Till date, approximately 3000 restriction enzymes have been discovered.

● Nomenclature of Restriction enzymes -

  • Restriction endonucleases are named according to specific nomenclature.
  • First 3 letters indicate genus & species of the bacterium from which it's derived, next letter indicates the strain of the organism & lastly comes the order in which the enzyme was discovered.
  • For example - In EcoRI, Eco stands for E.coli, R stands for strain Rd & I means it's 1st enzyme to be discovered in that series.

Thanks dear. Hope this helps you...
