Chipko movement

•The Chipko movement can essentially be called a women's movement.

• It was a nonbelligerent movement that was started to prevent the illegal deforestation and destruction of forest and trees.

•This movement is based on Gandhian methods of satyagraha and non-violent resistance and in this movement, people used to hug trees so as to prevent them from being cutting down .

•It was started in the early 1970s in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, then in Uttar Pradesh with growing awareness towards rapid deforestation.

•Sunder Lal Bahuguna, an eminent environmentalist, was the man behind the chipko movement.

• Women were active participants in this movement.
