Sols are classified on the basis of size of solid particles present in it.

Explanation:

  • When solid particles that are very small in size are present in a continuous liquid medium then the solution formed is known as sol. For example, blood, cell fluid, milk of magnesia etc are all sols.
  • Basically, a sol is a colloid in which solute are solid particles and a fluid acts as a dispersion medium. When the dispersion medium is water then it is known as a hydrosol. Particles of a sol have a size of about 1 nm to 100 nm.
  • Whereas if the dispersion medium is air then the colloid or sol is known as an aerosol. Sol is a heterogeneous mixture which will also show tyndall effect. Its particles do not settle down or separate over time.
