Sulfur dioxide reacts with water to form sulfurous acid. Substances in the upper atmosphere then catalyse the reaction between sulfurous acid and oxygen to form sulfuric acid. Similarly, nitrogen dioxide reacts with water to form a mixture of nitric acid and nitrous acid.
